You may have read my post last week about UCD offering Java courses for unemployed developers looking to retrain or gain new skills.
Well it appears that these courses are proving so popular that UCD are now running a June/July course! The extra dates are as follows:
- Foundations of Java:
Classes run 25 June – 1 July, exam 3 July. - Advanced Java:
Classes run 9 – 15 July, exam 17 July.
More details can be found here.
I signed up to the course last week, but have yet to receive any sign-up information, so maybe I just have to turn up. Has anybody else heard from UCD or Crovan with some sort of confirmation?

People are withdrawing from the ucd courses in June.Apparently people who attended the previous courses said it was bad value for money, with only 20 percent of people finnishing the course after the lecturer mumbled for 2 days.i think it might be possible to get half your money back.

About 100 people started the course. 53 sat the foundation exam with the majority passing it. Yes some people dropped out of the course but some also posponed it until June/July which was cleared by Crovan. The main difficulty was the amount of material that had to be covered over a short space of time. While there were two lecturers the first week who could have presented the material better the other lecturers were very good with two of them exceptional. There were labs in the afternoon where there were between 2 and 7 postgrads supervising and answerng any questions that came up. Also the quality of the questions that were asked especially during the lectures was exceptional and acknowledged by the Head of IT when the course concluded.

I’d love to know where you’re getting your info from. There are two reasons why I think it is good value. Firstly, the course is only E45, which wouldn’t even cover printing costs. Secondly, I’m not new to Java. I self-taught myself a few years back, and have developed a few applications in it. But I still found out things I didn’t know about Java in the course.
Also, there were 53 people took the first exam, of about 70, so whoever told you 20% is wrong also.
It is possible to get your money back though. At least, its been mentioned by the course head several times. I dont know under what circumstances you can get it back though.
Apologies for ranting back at you. I appreciate the comment all the same.
